Who is this course for?

This course is for you if you are interested in the behaviour, care and management of animals and wildlife.  It is for learners who want to work with animals or go on to study animal related courses at University.  This qualification will help you understand the knowledge and skills required for employment within the Animal Management industry.

 

What are the entry requirements for the course?

Minimum five GCSEs at grade C or (grade 4) or higher, including Maths, English Language and Biology.

 

How long is this course?

A two year full time programme starting in September and ending in June.

 

What will I study on this course?

These are the units you may study:

Understand and Promote Animal Health – learning about common diseases and how to deliver treatment.

Animal Accommodation – and how these can be applied in practice.

Animal Anatomy and Physiology – the structure and functions of animal systems and how it is adapted to its environment.

Plan and Monitor Animal Feeding – learn about nutritional requirements and carry out feeding activities (practical based).

Principles of Animal Biology – learn about the animal skeletal system and the structure and function of organs in various animals.

Animal Handling and Safe Handling – learn how to handle and restrain animals including the different types of equipment used (practical based).

Undertake and Review Related Work Experience in the Land-based Industries – this unit involves work experience. You will identify, participate, and review the placements you attend.

Animal Training – learn how to assess animal behaviour and how to train animals.

Investigative Project in the Land-based Sector – develop skills to plan, carry out and report on an investigative project based around your work experience.

Principles of Animal Nursing – helping you to develop an understanding of veterinary practice, procedures and equipment.

Principles and Practice of Exotic Animal Health and Husbandry – prepare accommodation and feeding regimes for exotic animals, together with how to handle, restrain and transport exotic species.

Wildlife population surveys, ecology and conservation- surveys of wildlife habitats and ecosystems and identifying the impacts of both natural and human influences on natural environments.

Undertake Kennel and Cattery Management – how to admit animals into a kennel or cattery, and about the different types of designs and facilities for kennels and catteries.

Principles of Animal Nutrition – develop an understanding of the main components of an animal’s diet and the different nutritional problems there are.

Wildlife Management and Rehabilitation – carry out wildlife population monitoring and learn about wildlife and human interaction.

Understand and Interpret Animal Behaviour and Communication – behaviour patterns in animals and how to interpret behaviour and animal communication.

Understand the Principles of Breed development and Welfare – understanding the management of breeding animals and how their welfare can be impacted and the uses of reproductive technology.

Equine Health, Handling and Husbandry- understanding of the principles of horse health, handling and husbandry and how these can be applied in practice

Business planning and improvement- explore business improvement, including opportunities for diversification, how it can give a competitive advantage and reduce environmental impact.

Zoological Animal Health- Understand and promote effective husbandry and health of animals kept in Zoological and Safari Parks

 

What Qualification will I gain?

City & Guilds Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management (Land-based).

 

Will I go out on work experience?

Courses at Highlands Colleges are about preparing you for the world of work. As part of your course, you will learn how to go about presenting yourself to an employer to stand the best chance of getting the job you are looking for.

You will spend over 300 hours within a work placement environment to prepare you for work in this industry.

 

What does this course lead on to?

Progression to Higher Education courses in Animal Management, Animal Behaviour, Marine Biology, Veterinary Nursing, Ecology and Conservation, or Zoology.  This course is equivalent to 3 A levels (48 – 168 UCAS points).

Additional Information

All 6th form courses are subject to minimum enrolment numbers.  Where a course does not meet the required number, it will be reluctantly cancelled for that academic year.  Applicants affected will be contacted and offered a transfer to another course if a suitable one is available.

Anyone who has been out of education for longer than 6 months will be invited for interview. Following interview, the application will be referred to a review panel.
