Who is this course for?
The course is suitable for individuals who have a keen interest in extending their communication skills and developing an understanding of how counselling theory can be used to influence practice in a problem solving manner. The course provides an introduction to the main psychological theories governing human behaviour and offers a valuable framework for developing a more informed approach to helping.
What are the entry requirements for the course?
Successful completion of Level 2 Skills is required and tutor recommendation.
Candidates for this course need to be emotionally ready; this course is not suitable for people who have recently been through a traumatic life experience. Such distance is required for recent addiction recovery also. For guidance please speak to the administrator.
How long is this course?
The next available course will commence on Monday September 9th 2024.
The course will run one evening a week from 6.00pm – 9.00pm at the Highlands College Campus.
It is a 30 week course delivered over one academic year (term time only)

What will I study on this course?
The main focus of the programme will be exploring how different theoretical perspectives of counselling can be used to structure helping processes. Topics will include exploring existential and psychoanalytical approaches and how techniques such as motivational interviewing and reality therapy can be applied in practice.
What Qualification will I gain?
Level 3 Intermediate Certificate in Counselling Studies.
Will I go out on work experience?
None required.
How is the course assessed?
- By examination, written assignments, journals, peer and tutor work, and assessed role play activities.
- One exam, one case study and class presentation and research at an exisiting agency.
What does this course lead on to?
Following successful completion of this course you may apply for the CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, which is offered over 2 years.
Acceptance to this Diploma will be based on successful completion of Level 3 and tutor recommendation.
Subject to availability, progression between counselling courses is not guaranteed.
