Social Work degree
The introduction of a degree course in the Island followed the recommendations of the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry, one of which outlined the need to build a stable and competent workforce.
During the event attendees had the opportunity to network with social workers, practitioners, hear talks from senior colleagues, and discuss their experience of social work in Jersey.
Laura Simpson, Deputy Head of Higher Education and Lecturer at University College Jersey, who organised the event, brought together Government and third sector organisations such as the Children’s Commissioners Office, Women’s Refuge, Beresford Street Kitchen, Les Amis, Mind Jersey and Experts by Experience who attended.
Following the event, Laura said: “Having been a Support Worker, Social Worker, Foster Carer, Training Manager and Educator, I have never felt in a more privileged position at University College Jersey. I saw World Social Work Day as an opportunity to connect with the community I joined only a year ago and to offer everyone a platform to be heard, to connect, to learn and most importantly to plan for a collective future in Jersey.
“I’ve often said that a social worker is only as good as the toolbox they carry, which is why I’ve encouraged students to network at every opportunity, learn about their community, what’s on offer and what’s missing?
“Through this approach word has spread about the work we’re doing and in September 2022 we have offered 15 Learners a place on the BA (Hons) Social Work (Jersey) Degree. This is a proud achievement for the whole island as we continue to develop on island expertise. This summer will see the first ever BA (Hons) Social Work (Jersey) graduates join the workforce, and my greatest hope is that they take their learning and passion to the community they serve and continuously work hard to change lives.”
