Course Overview

This course is for aspiring Carpenters wishing to study as an apprentice at college. Applicants will need to have the support of a relevant employer who will allow attendance at college one day per week and work the remaining days in the industry. The course will develop knowledge and skills whilst simultaneously working alongside industry professionals in the workplace to become a fully qualified Carpenter. The course is split over two years with the first year focusing on enabling skills to prepare for final assessments in year 2.

Course Content

Development of practical hand skills using Carpentry tools and materials, supported with theoretical lessons to consolidate the learning and provide the vital underpinning knowledge of the trade and wider Construction sector. Practical sessions will facilitate demonstrations and practice at various carpentry tasks, leading to final assessments in the workshop. Theory lessons culminate in end of unit exams through the City and Guilds portal.

The course requires attendance on a day release basis over the college term dates.

Who is this course for?

This apprenticeship programme is designed to prepare learners with the knowledge, skills, and understanding to work effectively in an early years setting and to be included in staff: child ratios. All applicants must be employed within an early years setting for a minimum of 20 hours per week and meet the criteria for the required work-based observations.

What are the entry requirements for the course?

  • A successful interview, a written task, a satisfactory DBS/Police Check (enhanced check), and reference will need to be completed prior to enrolment on this course.
  • No formal qualifications are required, but candidates must be working in a day nursery or reception class on a permanent contract working with children 0-5 years for a minimum of 20 hours a week and have been doing so for 6 months prior to the start of the course or hold a level 2 childcare qualification.
  • A good level of literacy and ICT is needed. All candidates will need access to a P.C or laptop.

Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Graduate Hairdresser (SRGH) with The Hair Council and can progress directly into employment in a variety of settings, including commercial salons, self-employed roles, television and film, cruise liners, hospitals, and more.
