Jersey Progression Qualification in Hair and Beauty

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for school-leavers who have a keen interest in working within the Hair and Beauty Industry. It will help you to develop your confidence and communication skills whilst learning skills to help you to progress into work within this sector.

The range of Hairdressing activities include shampoo and conditioning hair, assisting with salon duties, styling ladies’ and gents’ hair, and assisting with colouring.

On the Beauty side, you will assist with facial and skin treatments and learn about hand and skin care. You will learn basic make-up application skills and different treatments for nails.

You will also recognise the importance of healthy eating and basic nutrition as important aspects of hair and beauty care.

 

What are the entry requirements for the course?

You will need five GCSEs at grades 2 or 3 (grade E-D) or higher, including BOTH Maths and English Language.

 

How long is this course?

This is a one-year course, commencing September and ending in June.

 

What will I study on this course?

Units you may study:

Professional analysis of the skin and hair – study the structure and condition of the hair and skin. You will learn how to recognise contra-indications, and prepare for hair and beauty services.

Client care and salon industry awareness – provides you with the knowledge and skills required to work effectively in a commercial salon environment. You will also learn about the roles and responsibilities of those working in the hair and beauty industry.

Presentation of an overall image – create your individual overall image whilst incorporating preparation, planning and technical skills.

Working in the industry – develop your readiness for the world of work. Through research activities, you will develop an awareness of your industry sector and opportunities that may be open to you. You will conduct an assessment of your current employability skills, plan for placement, and subsequently embark on work experience. This unit concludes with an opportunity to re-assess your skill set and progress made.

Shampoo, condition and style different hair types and lengths – provides the necessary skills to carry out shampooing, conditioning, and a full range of blowdrying and styling services. Technically, you will learn about the science and effect of heat on the hair structure.

Lash, brows and spray tanning – learn the necessary theoretical and practical skills to carry out lash and brow treatments, spray tanning, and effective patch testing

Facial skin therapy – an introduction to the basics of skincare. You will perform facial treatments whilst carrying out a full skin analysis and identifying appropriate products for the skin.

Anatomy and physiology in the hair and beauty industry – a fundamental unit that focuses on all the anatomy and physiology required for the practical units within the diploma. You will apply the theory and science to the practical skills you are learning such as skin, nails, hair, and muscular systems.

Hair colouring principles and techniques – provides the opportunity to develop a range of skills and knowledge to effectively carry out a range of basic colouring services on a variety of clients.

Professional nail care – develop the professional skills to effectively perform manicure and pedicure treatments incorporating both gel nail application and paraffin wax. You will also learn to recognise the relevant skin and nail conditions.

 

What Qualification will I gain?

NCFE Jersey Progression Diploma in Hair and Beauty.

 

Will I go out on work experience?

Courses at Highlands College are about preparing you for the world of work. As part of your course, you will learn how to go about presenting yourself to an employer to stand the best chance of getting the job you are looking for.

You will spend at least one week in a work placement.

 

What does this course lead on to?

Prepares you to specialise in Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy.

Achieving other qualifications and gaining experience as part of the Highlands College Study Programme will enable you to progress to Hairdressing at Advanced Level or other Advanced Technical or Vocational courses that the college offers.

Additional Information

All 6th form courses are subject to minimum enrolment numbers. Where a course does not meet the required number, it will be reluctantly cancelled for that academic year. Applicants affected will be contacted and offered a transfer to another course if a suitable one is available.

Anyone who has been out of education for longer than 6 months will be invited for interview. Following interview, the application will be referred to a review panel.
