This course provides an introduction to the Mechanical Services, Engineering and Welding Industries.
This qualification is for people thinking about a career in the following areas:

- Fabrication and Welding
What are the entry requirements for the course?
You will need five GCSEs at grade 2 or 3 (D-E) or higher, including BOTH Maths and English Language.
How long is this course?
This is a one year course, starting September and ending in June.
What will I study on this course?
Perform Simple Mechanical Engineering and Welding Tasks – this unit is about performing straightforward engineering tasks in simulated situations that reflect actual site conditions. The learner will utilise the skills learned in previous units to enable them to prepare work surfaces and produce layout plans in order to carry out the installation of some common engineering components.
Safe Working Practices in Mechanical Engineering and Welding – this unit provides the learner with the essential health and safety knowledge required to prepare them to work safely in the construction/engineering industry. The knowledge covered relates to work carried out in a construction/engineering environment.
Carry Out Mechanical Engineering and Welding Project – this unit is about creating an installation/project relating to mechanical engineering in response to a brief. It will enable the learner to utilise the skills they have learnt during previous units in order to carry out the necessary planning, preparatory work and fabrication methods required to produce a realistic, working plumbing/electrical/engineering project.
Working in the Industry – this unit will develop your readiness for the world of work. Through research activities, you will develop an awareness of your industry sector and opportunities that may be open to you. You will conduct an assessment of your current employability skills, plan for a placement and subsequently embark on work experience. This unit concludes with an opportunity to re-assess your skill set and progress made.
Basic Engineering and Welding Techniques – this unit will provide the learner with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to carry out tasks in mechanical engineering. Learners will be introduced to processes, tools, equipment and materials used in the industry and will develop their hand skills whilst carrying out basic engineering and welding related tasks.
Advanced Engineering and Welding Techniques – in this unit the learner will further develop their skills in more advanced engineering and welding techniques, such as manual arc welding and tungsten arc gas shielded welding. Learners will cover the health and safety requirements of using engineering and welding equipment when performing more complex tasks commonly found in the industry.
Basic Plumbing Techniques – this unit provides the learner with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to carry out straightforward fabrication techniques commonly found in the plumbing industry. Learners will be introduced to the specialist equipment used for simple bending and jointing of pipework, and connecting of plumbing components.
Advanced Plumbing Techniques – this unit will provide the learner with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to carry out advanced fabrication techniques used in plumbing. Learners will use more complex fabrication methods with a variety of materials to carry out tasks related to the plumbing industry.
Basic Electrical Techniques – this unit will provide the learner with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to carry out basic tasks commonly found in the electrical industry. Learners will be introduced to the equipment used in the connection and jointing of cables along with basic wiring and connections of electrical equipment.
Advanced Electrical Techniques – this unit will provide the learner with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to carry out advanced fabrication techniques relating to tasks carried out in the electrical industry. Learner will use a range of specialist equipment and materials to wire and connect electrical components and equipment commonly used in industry.
What Qualification will I gain?
Jersey Progression Certificate/Diploma in Mechanical Services Engineering and Welding.
Students must pass all units to gain the Diploma.
Will I go out on work experience?
Courses at Highlands College are about preparing you for the world of work. As part of your course, you will learn how to go about presenting yourself to an employer to stand the best chance of getting the job you are looking for. You will spend time in a work placement.
What does this course lead on to?
Progression is into industry and as a part-time student studying towards a specialist qualification in Electrical Installation, Plumbing or Fabrication and Welding.
Achieving other qualifications and gaining experience as part of the Highlands Study Programme will enable you to progress to other Advanced Technical or Vocational courses that the college offers.

Additional Information
All 6th form courses are subject to minimum enrolment numbers. Where a course does not meet the required number, it will be reluctantly cancelled for that academic year. Applicants affected will be contacted and offered a transfer to another course if a suitable one is available.
Anyone who has been out of education for longer than 6 months will be invited for interview. Following interview, the application will be referred to a review panel.
