Course Details

In these classes we will be mainly looking at the garden and with the end of spring and its coming into summer the tasks involved around this time. Subjects will include digging, soil prep, sowing seed, veg, pruning, watering, plant and bed maintenance, pot displays and basic tool maintenance. We will also broach the subject of lawns, hanging baskets and an insight into basic garden design and planting plans. Some lessons can have a practical element to them so please bring your safety boots/shoes, gardening gloves and secateurs, as well as appropriate clothing if you would like to have a more hands on approach with the practical side of things. Practical’s are not for everybody, and everyone learns differently so alternatively please feel free to observe and learn when these take place if you want to.£235

Can anyone apply for a course?

The Adult & Community Education (ACE) programme is available to all students aged 18 or over who are no longer in compulsory education.

How do I apply for a course?

You can book your ACE course online!

How do I pay for a course?

Can I pay the course fee by instalments or by post-dated cheque?

Unfortunately, no. You will not have your enrolment confirmed until payment is received in full.

What do my course fees pay for?

All ACE course fees include your tuition and a registration fee. They may also include a contribution towards the cost of materials, room rental, handouts, artist models, equipment or assessment fees.

PLEASE NOTE: For some courses, the cost of materials is included in the course, and for others, you will be required to supply your own materials. See course description for details.

Are any concessionary rates available?

We offer a reduced rate to students who are over 60 years old. The discount will be applied at check out. Please note that the Over 60s discount is not applied to courses with a duration of fewer than 5 weeks and/or accredited courses.

When do courses run?

ACE courses vary in length from two hour workshops to one academic year. The majority of courses follow an academic timetable and may include half-term, bank holiday or other breaks.

What if my course is relocated, rescheduled or cancelled?

We make every effort to avoid doing this, but occasionally it is necessary. This is why it is important for us to have your current contact information.

Eligibility for ACE courses

The Adult & Community Education (ACE) programme is available to students aged 18 or over who are no longer in compulsory education. (Unless specified in the course information).

Application priority

Applications for Adult & Community Education (ACE) courses are accepted on a first come, first served basis on receipt of the fees. If the wait list is sufficiently large and additional tutors and facilities are available another course may be set up, for which you will be offered a place

Cancellations

A minimum enrolment number is required to recover the full costs of providing a course. If numbers of students fail to reach this minimum we reluctantly cancel it. Applicants are provided with a full refund or a transfer to another suitable course if one is available

Refunds

Unfortunately, we only offer a refund if a course has been cancelled by Highlands College. Circumstances such as illness, work commitments or leaving the Island are not considered for refunds. Course places cannot be deferred to another term and are not transferable to another person.
